I've studied in Germany as exchange student for one year and I should say that german informatik(they say it is a CS) is something like between software engineering and com. programming. In my opinion the name of "CS" should be given to this deps.

By the way, the 4.and 7.topics are not related with CS at all=)(my idea)
CS is shortly: knowing arch of Comp, computaional theory, DS, Automata The.,math(like linear algebra, diff.equ, numerical analy.,stats...) and so on ;)

I feel that a result settling P ?= NP will be useful whatever the answer is. This is also a deep theoretical problem. However, many theoreticians don't actively work on it because they need to publish in order to get PhD's/get tenure/etc. Focusing solely on such a hard problem is the luxury of ppl with secure positions in academia.

Maybe you forgot that while the theorists trot around, burning through millions of investor dollars to (hopefully) revolutionize the world someday, some pragmatist out there has to actually do those "menial" web engineering jobs because the world can't wait on that life-changing breakthrough--people need consumables every single day. It's amazing how often brilliance mutates into arrogance.

\and hoe did he1d get our attention to the article?
Nice strategy, pal! and a well written article too.

In my opinion, having a computer science degree to develop web/desktop "business" applications is like getting a law degree to be in sales. If computer science majors want to apply their learned skills, would they not be better off developing complex software used by NASA, defense military and such?

I agree with jrdittmann, I also see computer science majors as those that build tools for developing software.
